Erkence Olive Oil: The Unique Heritage of Karaburun-Urla

March 2026 · 8 min read

Erkence — meaning "the early one" in Turkish — is one of Turkey's earliest-harvesting olive varieties. But what truly sets it apart is that it is an endemic variety that grows exclusively in the Karaburun and Urla districts of İzmir. Found nowhere else on Earth, this variety is a millennia-old gift of a narrow coastal strip at the western tip of the Aegean.

Geography: The Karaburun-Urla Peninsula

Karaburun and Urla sit on a peninsula extending into the Aegean Sea at the westernmost point of İzmir. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, this geography possesses a unique microclimate: mild winters, cool summer nights, high humidity, and constant sea breezes.

These climatic conditions, combined with limestone and clay soil composition, enable Erkence olives to ripen early and accumulate high levels of phenolic compounds. The peninsula's isolated nature has also been instrumental in preserving the variety's genetic purity over centuries.

Harvest Period and Early Ripening

Erkence is harvested 4–6 weeks earlier than other Turkish varieties, between mid-October and early November. Early harvest means the olives are collected during the transition from green to purple — preserving their high polyphenol and antioxidant content.

Early-harvest olive oils are among the most valued products in the global premium segment. Erkence's natural early ripening gives producers an advantage that no other variety can offer in this segment.

Flavor Profile

Erkence olive oil exhibits an intensity and complexity rarely found in endemic varieties:

  • Nose: Intense green leaf, freshly cut grass, and artichoke aromas
  • Palate: Pronounced bitterness followed by medium-to-high pungency (pepper-like heat)
  • Notes: Fresh almond, green tomato, arugula, and black pepper
  • Finish: Long and persistent; characteristic pungency felt in the throat

Chemical Analysis and Quality Indicators

Laboratory analyses conducted by the Olive Research Institute reveal that Erkence olive oil possesses exceptional quality parameters:

0.26%

Free Fatty Acidity

Extra virgin limit: <0.8%

6.96

Peroxide Value (meqO₂/kg)

Extra virgin limit: <20

360.95

Total Phenols (mgKAE/kg)

High: >250 mgKAE/kg

Analysis Note

The values above are based on official laboratory analyses conducted by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Olive Research Institute, accredited under TS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The 0.26% free acidity is well below international extra virgin thresholds, confirming superior quality. The 360.95 mgKAE/kg total phenol content is tangible proof of Erkence's extraordinary antioxidant power.

Health Properties and Phenolic Compounds

One of the most remarkable features of Erkence olive oil is its exceptionally high phenolic content. A total phenol value exceeding 360 mg/kg places this oil among the highest-antioxidant olive oils in the world.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved the health claim that "olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress" when at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives are consumed in 20 g of olive oil daily. Erkence olive oil is one of the rare varieties that comfortably exceeds this threshold.

Production and Market Position

The fact that Erkence grows only on the Karaburun-Urla peninsula naturally limits production volumes. This scarcity positions the variety firmly in the premium and ultra-premium segments. Small and medium-scale producers in the region typically employ cold-press methods, producing low-volume but exceptionally high-quality oil.

Erkence-based oils regularly win awards at international olive oil competitions (NYIOOC, Mario Solinas, JOOP), making a significant contribution to the global recognition of Turkish olive oil.
